Who are the candidates ?
Renuvion (J-Plasma) is an excellent modality for patients with mild to moderate excess skin who do not want scarring, incisions, or extended downtime. For subcutaneous plasma treatment, any skin type is a good candidate. For the facial resurfacing handpiece, only lighter skin tones are candidates.
How does this technique work ?
Plasma energy is the fourth state of matter. It is the most abundant form of visible energy in the universe. Common examples of plasma in nature are lighting and the Northern Lights. When the gas is exposed to an electrical charge, it creates plasma energy. This technology has been exploited and used in medicine for decades in various forms. Any general surgery resident is impressed by the effectiveness of the argon beam coagulator when they first see it in action. Helium plasma is unique in that it requires only a small radio frequency charge to activate helium gas, resulting in an abundant release of ionic energy. The active plasma beam is enveloped by a cloud of cold helium gas, maintaining the temperature between 100 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Plasma action does not appear to rely solely on heat to create changes like all others energy-based devices. Does the procedure require general anesthesia ?
Regeneration (J-Plasma) can be performed under general anesthesia, sedation or even local anesthesia only for limited areas. Pro-Nox nitrous oxide administration can also be used as an inhalation anesthetic; similar to laughing gas at your dentist. Pro-Nox is often combined with oral pain relievers to prevent the need for sleep.
How many treatments will I need ?
Renuvion (J-Plasma) is a unique treatment. You will begin to see results shortly after surgery, but the skin continues to tighten over the next few months and up to a year as the skin remodels and deposits new collagen.
Recovery after skin resurfacing ?
Although most patients are awake and about 2 weeks old, there is still some redness/erythema that lasts for about 4 weeks. The energy penetrates deep into the skin for maximum results that extend downtime. This contrasts with the Renuvion (J-Plasma) squeeze where patients returned to work within days. For limited areas, most patients only need Motrin or Tylenol during recovery. For larger areas, we prescribe narcotic pain relievers. However, in our experience, patients usually only take the medication for the first few days.
